md MD

md is a med student that needs a bike.  in her cohort is jg,  an old classmate of mine. he got a bike from me this year and recently referred md my way.  she is 6 feet tall and has a vintage classic style.    sure enough my bike collection contained a large frame peugeot mixte, which I have dialed in and tuned up for ms. md, MD.  here she is.  the seat will be about 3 inches higher for md!

Dear faithful readers and those new to wheelright,

This blog is about rides I don't take. this post, however, has a twist, it's about a ride I facilitated by loaning out one of my prized rusty possessions, the schwinn manta ray. This stripped down oversized stingray sports white wheels from a 24 inch hollywood and a special ape hanger specific basket. My friend iron mike wanted to roll with yuki, visiting from out of town, and she needed a bike. At 5 feet tall, Yuki fit perfectly on the manta ray (and the run a bout, but with 16 inch wheels,that bike isn't too practical for longer rides). We lowered the banana seat, and she was off, for about a 10 mile ride. It makes me happy to have bikes for friends. Next post, I promise, will be about a ride I take.

The Meadow Opens in New York

I really want a bike that I can travel with, so a touring folder is really an attractive obsession for me. Here's another gorgeous Bike Friday that I recently met. Notice the hand built modular carriers, front and rear. The man who made them takes (steel?) tubes, inserts connector pieces, brazes, builds. Like legos he said. Notice his flask water bottle holder also, super lovely. I saw the flask and cage at Mike's Bikes, though, and it was $49!! Hope he got it at cost. Love the Friday and all it's fixings.

Electra's Ticino Mixte is Alright

Actually this bike is pretty excellent. The 20spd version comes with a 105 grupo, hammered alloy fenders, bar end brake levers, panaracer tires and more. It's a road worthy cycle that screams comfort. The head tube higher than the seat post means a relaxed riding position. When equipped with high quality components the ticino may be a true country cycle. I just wonder about the frames. It seems the cheaper models are aluminum (boo) and the top of the line frames, alloy. Is the ticino too good to be true?

cargo bikes

the toyota matrix kicks ass. here a zip car matrix i rented to donate some bikes. it's loaded with 4 complete bicycles and some other stuff (=cargo). In order for me to get more bikes, and cuz i got a ping pong table for the garage, it was necessary for me to thin out my collection. from 3 skip tooth sprocket bikes to one, plus two others, i am lighter and ready for frances and ping pong tournaments. goodbye old girls.

I apologize that I never told you how my mixte worked out. I started a while back telling you I was building up a frameset and taking you on test rides. You know I chose a soma mixte. Here's how I set it up. Only thing missing in the foto is the fenders, which finally went on a week or so ago.

hand selecting every detail of my bike was quite a learning experience and has earned me some street credibility with bike nerds. graduating from found bikes to my own custom touring build has rekindled my cycle lust and left me wanting more. ready for my handbuilt (frances).
