This is patricia dolores bird, a green cheek conure (cinnamon mutation) that rides around san francisco with her cycling father. I have a male green cheek conure, chicken. I dream of an arranged marriage for these two cute birds, but it isnt very realistic right now since chicken doesnt come out on the bike with me. We've done it before, but I am afraid chicken will fly off and get lost. maybe if I partially clip his wings, so he can fly but not far, then he and pd can roll out together.

A favorite shot from my christmas eve ride with a dear friend to see a dear friend. I never made it to my destination, her majesty's residence, the taj mahovel, as the last ferry to san francisco beckoned just as we drew near, some 20 miles out and after riding for two hours. Another ride fail, but alas no ride is a failure. As for my dear friend whose company I did not grant myself the time to enjoy, I will make it up to you (us).

Here is a post I guest wrote for CYLRAB. Figured since it is so great, and it is my work I will post it here too, for all my loyal readers and commenters. The first time I saw this man I was in awe. The second time, I recognized him as I made out his form up the block and whipped out my camera. Ah-ma-zing.

Once a life has been changed by cycling, the notion of not riding becomes a threat to all that is good and true. As demonstrated here by Super Grandpa, of San Francisco, no expense will be spared to accommodate the aging cyclist in her/his quest to be mobile. Do you know someone who exudes this sentiment and clearly will always ride? Do you know this man, whose image was captured on Dolores Street? I'd love to learn more about him and how he fashioned his bike support system, as I figure I will be doing the same in a few decades.

today turning from market onto dolores I saw this pack of bmx kids and stopped to shoot their photo, just as they started rolling out.

They all lined up at 14th street waiting for the light so they could bomb the hill, something I do just about every morning (except i dont wait for the light, I either bomb it or stop at the bottom depending on the timing.)

so i made a quick decision to roll down the hill with them and video it. The result is 51 seconds of fun. If i reacted quicker, I wouldnt have had to shift gears up, as you will see near the end. bad videography and all, I find this really awesome.

Dear faithful readers and those new to wheelright,

This blog is about rides I don't take. this post, however, has a twist, it's about a ride I facilitated by loaning out one of my prized rusty possessions, the schwinn manta ray. This stripped down oversized stingray sports white wheels from a 24 inch hollywood and a special ape hanger specific basket. My friend iron mike wanted to roll with yuki, visiting from out of town, and she needed a bike. At 5 feet tall, Yuki fit perfectly on the manta ray (and the run a bout, but with 16 inch wheels,that bike isn't too practical for longer rides). We lowered the banana seat, and she was off, for about a 10 mile ride. It makes me happy to have bikes for friends. Next post, I promise, will be about a ride I take.

midsummer's day is old school for summer solstice and that was yesterday and so an extension of this idea gives us the title of this post. below is a picture from david nichols, presumably taken from his iphone tonight while experiencing the presidio from butterlap, a weekly san francisco night time loop group ride. some times this spot is perfect for viewing an iridescent sunset. tonight, it was still light, the horizon nestled between gray clouds. i didn't make the ride due to a flat tire and not enough ganas to fix it 'right now' and as I look at the still light 9pm sky and david's photo, I am now deeply remorseful for not pushing through, fixing the tire, and riding. lesson for next time.

My apartment is 24 feet long and I can ride a revolution or so in a straight line before I run out of space. What if I had an old converted warehouse type space where I could ride in circles and figures eights? Parties would certainly be more fun.

new year 2000 i visited amsterdam for the first time. this is me in love. I drove a car from hamburg to a^dam after new year zwei thousand in berlin, and once i made it through the outer ring road, I realized amsterdam was a bicycle city. i feel silly now for not knowing that in advance, but it WAS my first time out of the country... I ditched the car and spent one of the first weeks of my life out of "urban" southern california and my first time ever in a true bicycle culture. I would never be the same.

i cry for a car free life. i live without a car, but i ride with cars, and every time i am on the road there is tension. biking in san francisco is a functional contrast of relaxation and stress, more lovely than not, but there is better. there is bike culture. give me bike culture(not counterculture), give me bicycle(mobility)asylum now. please.

Testing Riding a Bike: The Bakfiets Experience

Enough said. The bakfiets is an experience we should all take part in. The bakfiets is a Long John style cargo bike which according to longjohn.org is a two-wheeled cargo bike with the load area between the steering tube and front wheel. The site doesn't clarify who designed the first long john, but does attribute a Danish company with first manufacturing the bike in the 1940's. One thing is for sure, long john cargo bikes haul ass, and then some, and the modern editions handle like a dream.

Thanks to MyDutchBike.com, I had the privilege of riding a bakfiets home, loaded (the bike not me), after KT and I finished the Vélo Vogue Bike Wardrobe Remix photo booth at the Disposable Film Festival. I had to figure out a way to get the photo booth equipment AND my bike home too, but with a huge cargo box I knew it wouldn't be a thing.

Loading the bakfiets was cake and it took about 15 seconds to adjust to riding, the 8-speed nexus hub was perfect even with a little incline, handling was smooth enough that I could ride one handed and snap photos of myself, getting the bike on and off the kick stand was a breeze, and if I could afford it, I'd stock my bike garage with a bakfiets today. Experience the feat of engineering that is this bike. Get on a bakfiets, find a load to carry, GO!

A Belated Let the Games Begin!

I first found Let's Go Ride a Bike (LGRAB) searching the interwebs for images of Betty Foy, a rivendell mixte. LGRAB is one of my favorite bike blogs, offering up beautiful images and impeccable taste in bikes. Trisha navigating Nashville and Dottie in a dress pedaling through Chicago in the snow are two of the things that make the world a good place. Needless to say, in true procrastinator form, I am making a last minute dash to enter the LGRAB summer cycling games.

Group Ride- 22 miles to Maker Faire

I'm on a little bikey bloggy san francisco email list and Gwen asked if anyone wanted to ride to the Maker Faire. 48 emails later, 13 of us met up for a coffee, picnic lunch and ride.

Special thanks to Patrick Sexton for his project Schwinn Cruisers. He's currently in the process of documenting over 100 years of annual Schwinn catalogs, dating back to 1899 and he's looking for help.
This project is especially dear to me because I first fell in love with bikes as an adult due entirely to a purple schwinn hollywood. I've been bike obsessed ever since and have fond memories of our decade long love affair. It should come as no surprise that it also makes me really happy to see new editions of Schwinn classics gracing our streets as modern city bikes.

Thanks for your work, Patrick, you're serving up a delicious slice of american pie.

WENG- Urban Transport Vehicles

The WENG (Where Everybody Needs to Go) is an electric urban utility vehicle, designed by Stanford graduate students. The prototype, unveiled yesterday, is a chic vehicle that may appeal to people who want to get out of their cars but can't quite make the shift to cycling. It's a stylish and utilitarian, cheaper version of an electric golf cart. The WENG is reminiscent of a dutch cargo bike with features such as a wood slat cargo bed and a minimalist chassis. With a 50 mile battery life, proposed production price tag under 10K and 35mph speed, this vehicle would be perfect for transporting people and goods around San Francisco.

Here's an urban re-vision: Some people have cars, most people don't . Services like zipcar and city car share redesign their programs and offer WENGs for city travel, while 4000lb internal combustion vehicles are reserved for highway trips. Some people use WENGs via vehicle sharing programs. Others own WENGs. Bicyclists are safe and WENGers are conscientious motorists, more exposed and connected to the streets. Air and life quality indexes are record high.

I really want a bike that I can travel with, so a touring folder is really an attractive obsession for me. Here's another gorgeous Bike Friday that I recently met. Notice the hand built modular carriers, front and rear. The man who made them takes (steel?) tubes, inserts connector pieces, brazes, builds. Like legos he said. Notice his flask water bottle holder also, super lovely. I saw the flask and cage at Mike's Bikes, though, and it was $49!! Hope he got it at cost. Love the Friday and all it's fixings.
